Paint Bubbling in Darlaston

Paint bubbling or blistering in your Darlaston home? What causes the bubbles, how to tell if it is damp, and how the surface is fixed and repainted properly.

Bubbles or blisters in paint are pockets where the paint has lifted away from the surface beneath. The usual causes are moisture, heat, or a surface that was not clean and dry when it was painted. If you press a bubble and water or damp powder comes out, moisture is the cause, and that needs dealing with before any repainting.

Moisture bubbles often appear in bathrooms and kitchens, on walls with damp coming through, or where a leak has wet the plaster. Heat blisters show up on radiators, near cookers and on woodwork in strong sun, especially with darker colours. Painting over dust, grease or a shiny gloss without sanding, or putting emulsion straight onto wallpaper, can also cause the new coat to lift and bubble.

In Darlaston, Bentley and Pleck we see bubbling most often in small bathrooms in older terraces, and on walls where a damp issue was painted over rather than fixed. The proper repair is to cut or scrape out the bubbles, let the surface dry fully, sort the cause, fill and sand smooth, prime any bare patches, and repaint with the right paint for the room. Done that way, the bubbles do not come back.

Good to know

Paint Bubbling: quick answers

Why is my paint bubbling?

Usually moisture, heat, or painting over a surface that was not clean, dry or keyed.

Is bubbling paint a sign of damp?

Often. If water or damp powder comes out of the bubbles, the wall needs checking.

Can I paint over the bubbles?

No. They need cutting back and the cause fixing, or they will return.

Will it happen again?

Not if the cause is dealt with and the surface is prepared properly.
